4. The Australian wombat is a member of the marsupial order of mammals which is unique to Australasia. There are two species - the hairy nosed wombat and common wombat. Hairy nosed wombat found mostly in Tasmania and South-Eastern Australia; it is virtually tailless with small ears and coarse fur. It often lives in cultivated farmland where it digs burrows, and for this reason it is disliked by farmers, who regard it as a pest.
